The Coroner’s Office is assigned the duty by Wyoming Statutes to investigate all unattended or unanticipated deaths in the County, and by forensic medical-legal investigation principles, certify a manner and cause of death in those cases. The specific duties and standards of those investigations are detailed on another section. As well, additional pages detail other areas that may be of concern to the public or of interest in this area.

     Mark Stratmoen, Coroner

Mark has been a certified death investigator since 1998. Before taking office in 2015, he also served as department administrator from 2004 to 2014, and as Chief Deputy from 2007 to 2014. Service also included being a member of DMORT (Disaster Mortuary Operational Response Team) under the Federal National Disaster Medical Service, Department of Health and Human Services, with deployment to work Hurricane Katrina in the New Orleans area in 2005. He has over 650 hours of State certified medical-legal training. This also includes being the lead investigator on over 600 cases, including the lead on over 220 non-natural deaths.

 

     Erin Ivie, Chief Deputy

 Erin was appointed as a Deputy Coroner in 2003, and completed a Bachelor’s Degree in Criminal Justice with a Minor in Crime Scene Investigation/Forensic Science in 2011. Ms. Ivie is nationally certified as a Medicolegal Death Investigator by the American Board of Medicolegal Death Investigators, is a member of the International Association of Bloodstain Pattern Analysts (IABPA), is a General Section member of the American Academy of Forensic Sciences (AAFS), recognized by the International Association for Identification (IAI) as a Medicolegal Death Investigator, and is a member of the Society of Medicolegal Death Investigators (SOMDI). In addition to her national associations, she is recognized by Wyoming Peace Officers Standards and Training as a General Lecturer and teaches regularly at the Wyoming Law Enforcement Academy. Erin also serves as a Medicolegal Death Investigator for the Region 8 Disaster Mortuary Operational Response Team (DMORT), and attended training with the Office of the New York City Chief Medical Examiner. Erin has over 1,400 hrs. of training in her respective field.

 As of November 2017, Deputy Simmers is our most recent addition to the Fremont County Coroner’s Office.  Tony has lived in Wyoming since 2011, and is proud to call Lander his home. He is a graduate of CWC’s Outdoor Education Program and has a background in Wilderness Medicine and First Response.  Tony very much enjoys living in Wyoming and spends most of his time backpacking in the mountains or shooting at the Lander Rifle Range.   He feels very privileged to live in such a beautiful area and considers it an honor to serve our community.
