Application for EMT Plates

  1. A written statement of eligibility, accompanied by a copy of the applicant’s current Emergency Medical Technician Certification, shall be presented to the County Treasurer along with the application.
  2. The approved application, accompanied by a $30 fee made payable to WYDOT, must be remitted to the address at the top of the application.
  3. Plates will be issued in consecutive order and forwarded to the County Treasurer’s office.
  4. Current plates must be surrendered to the Treasurer’s office upon issuance of the EMT plates.
Application for Firefighter Plates

  1. Application for license plates will be made annually to the County Treasurer's office.
  2. A written statement of eligibility, preferably on fire district/department letterhead, signed by the fire chief or designated assistant, shall be presented to the County Treasurer before a license plate may be issued.  A written statement of eligibility for a retired firefighter shall be signed only by the fire chief.
  3. The approved application, accompanied by a $30 fee made payable to WYDOT, must be remitted to the address at the top of the application.
  4. Plates will be issued in consecutive order and forwarded to the County Treasurer’s office.
  5. Current plates must be surrendered to the Treasurer’s office upon issuance of the Firefighter Plates.
Application for Handicapped Plates

Application for Personalized Plates

Personalized plates may be obtained for use on all regularly registered vehicles except:

  • Vehicles obtained for sale or demonstration by licensed dealers.
  • Vehicles for which radio amateur plates are issued.
  • Apportioned vehicles.
  • Vehicles for which specialty plates are obtained.
Personalized prestige plates will be sent to the Treasurer of the county for which the plates are ordered. Upon payment of the regular registration fees, the County Treasurer will issue the prestige plates in lieu of regular plates. If the vehicle has a current regular registration, the regular license plates must be surrendered to the County Treasurer upon issuance of the prestige plates.

Prestige Plates Allowable Combinations:

  • A maximum of 5 letters or combination of 5 letters, numbers, and spaces.
  • Only capital letters and Arabic numbers.
  • No symbols.
  • No combination with more than three (3) W’s or M’s (e.g., not allowed: WMWW).
  • No combination of entirely numbers unless the first digit is a zero (0).
  • No combination consisting entirely of numbers followed by a single alphabetic suffix (e.g., not allowed: 11A, 12B, 123C).
  • No combination that spells, connotes, abbreviates, or otherwise stands for language that is obscene, vulgar, indecent, or pruriently suggestive.
  • No combination that duplicates a currently issued plate or conflicts with a series of letter and number combinations on a regular issue license plate.
Application for Military Specialty Plates

To qualify, you must have served at least one period of honorable service which resulted in the issuing of a DD 214.

If approved, your license plates will be forwarded to the County Treasurer’s office you indicate on your application.

Application for UW License Plate

Any person required to register a vehicle in Wyoming may apply to the University of Wyoming for distinctive University of Wyoming license plates.  ***Applicants are not required to be alumni of the University of Wyoming to apply for this Specialty Plate.***

General Provisions

  1. A completed application shall be mailed to the address shown at the bottom of the application, along with a fee of $130 made payable to the University of Wyoming. ($100 fee for UW scholarships or student programming and $30 special plate fee)
  2. The application will be reviewed by the University and, if approved, forwarded to WYDOT.
  3. Plates will be issued in consecutive order and forwarded to the County Treasurer’s office.
  4. Current plates must be surrendered to the Treasurer’s office upon issuance of the UW Plates.

Application for American Indian Exemption

Application for Gold Star License Plates

The following items must be mailed with your application:

  • A copy of death certificate or other documentation indicating the service member’s death while a member of the armed forces. Do not submit an original.

If approved, your license plates will be forwarded to the County Treasurer’s Office you indicated on the application.

The $30 application fee will be paid by the Wyoming Veteran’s Commission through 2012.

Application for Embossed License Plates

Any person required to register a vehicle in Wyoming may apply to WYDOT for embossed license plates for any vehicle owned or leased by the applicant.

  • These license plates may take 10-12 weeks for processing.
  • The fee to emboss your license plate is $50.
  • A copy of your registration and the $50 fee must accompany the application or it will be returned.
  • Your plate will be delivered to the County Treasurer’s office in which the vehicle is registered. For any new Prestige Plate orders in which the vehicle is registered in a county other than the owner’s home county, the plates will be sent to the County Treasurer’s office of the county in which the applicant made the request. After that first year, the vehicle owner can then renew their Prestige Plates in their home county.

Application for New or Duplicate Plates

Application for Street Rod or Custom Plates

A vehicle may be considered a Street Rod if it meets the following criteria:

  • Must be a 1948 or older model,  or manufactured after 1948 to resemble a vehicle manufactured before 1949.
AND

  • The vehicle has been altered from the manufacturer’s original design, or has a body constructed from nonoriginal materials
A vehicle may be considered a Custom Vehicle if it meets the following criteria:

  • Vehicle must be at least 25 years old and of a model year after 1948, or was manufactured to resemble a vehicle at least 25 years old and of a model year after 1948.
AND

  • Vehicle has been altered from the manufacturer’s original design, or has a body constructed from nonoriginal materials.
The fee for a Street Rod or Custom Vehicle License Plate is $100.

  • Vehicle owner has to have resided in Wyoming for at least 1 year.
  • Vehicle is owned and operated solely for the purposes of organized antique car club activities, parades, exhibitions, tours and other related activities.
  • Vehicle will NOT be used for general transportation.
The fee of $100, a copy of the title, proof of payment of sales tax and proof of liability insurance must accompany the application. The registration expires upon transfer of ownership of the vehicle or upon the department’s issuance of a new plate design.

Homemade Vehicles and State-Assigned VINs

State-assigned vehicle identification numbers (VIN) are issued to homemade or rebuilt vehicles which do not have a VIN, and to vehicles which have more than one VIN. Vehicle owners shall apply to WYDOT for a state-assigned VIN if:

  • Any part of the vehicle on which the VIN appears is replaced.
  • A vehicle part containing the VIN is incorporated into another vehicle.
A Wyoming VIN can only be issued to Wyoming residents. The department shall determine that the applicant for the VIN is the lawful owner of the vehicle. The vehicle will require a VIN inspection to accompany the application. A Wyoming law enforcement officer must perform the inspection.

Application for Amateur Radio Plates

Residents licensed by the Federal Communications Commission to engage in private and experimental two-way radio operation and holding bona fide novice class licenses or higher may apply to WYDOT for radio amateur plates for the following vehicles they own:

  • 1 passenger car
  • 1 pickup

Application for Pioneer Plates

Requirements

  • Vehicle must be 25 years or older.
  • Vehicle owner has to have resided in Wyoming for at least 1 year.
  • Vehicle is owned and operated solely for the purposes of organized antique car club activities, parades, exhibitions, tours and other related activities.
  • Vehicle will NOT be used for general transportation.
The fee of $10, a copy of the title, proof of payment of sales tax and proof of liability insurance must accompany the application below .

Application for Disabled Veteran Plates

A disabled veteran who receives fifty percent (50%) or more service connected disability compensation from the United States department of veteran’s affairs and who is a resident at the time of initial application and renewal application, may apply for distinctive license plates for a passenger car, pickup truck, motorcycle or multipurpose vehicle owned or leased by him upon registration of the vehicle. Owners must provide:

  • Proof of residency in Wyoming.
  • A copy of DD 214 discharge certificate or separation papers. Do not submit an original. Upon verification of service, the copy will be destroyed. (Applies to applications for new plates, not renewals)
  • Proof of 50% or more service connected disability compensation from the VA.
  • Take your application to the County Treasurer’s office in your county of registration.
Application for Tribal Plates

Any person required to register a vehicle in Wyoming may apply to the University of Wyoming for distinctive Eastern Shoshone or Northern Arapaho Tribal license plates.  ***Applicants are not required to be a tribal member to apply for this Specialty Plate.***

General Provisions

  1. A completed application shall be mailed to the address shown at the bottom of the application, along with a fee of $100 made payable to the University of Wyoming.  ($70 fee for Tribal Scholarships and $30 special plate fee)
  2. The application will be reviewed by the University and, if approved, forwarded to WYDOT.
  3. Plates will be issued in consecutive order and forwarded to the County Treasurer’s office.
  4. Current plates must be surrendered to the Treasurer’s office upon issuance of the Tribal Plates.
